Google Search Based Keyword Tool

The Search-based Keyword Tool generates keyword and landing page ideas highly relevant and specific to your website. In doing so, the tool helps you identify additional advertising opportunities that aren’t currently being used in your AdWords ad campaigns. The tool goes one step further by tailoring the keywords and other data (such as the amount of competition for the keyword, the suggested bid, and more) based on your language or country/territory settings.

Based on your URLs, the Search-based Keyword Tool displays a list of relevant user queries that have occurred on Google.com (and on other Google search properties, such as google.co.uk) with some frequency over the past year; these suggestions can be found under the Keywords tab, in the New keywords related to (site) section. In the Keywords related to your search section, you can see a broad list of keyword ideas that are also relevant, but aren’t necessarily based on your site.

The keywords are also organized by category. Click any category to expand and view its subcategories. If applicable, you’ll also see the keywords organized by brand names.

The Search-based Keyword Tool compares your website and current AdWords campaigns against actual, past Google search queries to identify additional keywords that might be relevant for your campaigns. The tool compiles a list of search queries relevant to your website that don’t already appear in your AdWords campaigns. By changing your language or country/territory settings, you can view keywords (and corresponding data, such as the amount of competition, suggested bid, etc.) specific to those settings.

With access to the actual terms your potential customers are using when they search Google for your products in your language or region, you may have a better chance of reaching your target audience.

Internet Explorer was not able to open Excel or Document files

The problem was happens when you create a virtual directory contains document files, e.g. xls, doc, pdf, etc. When you redirect from application to the files it will display the message below:

“Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later”

The problem is that IE cannot handle file downloads when the cache-control header is set to no-cache.

The solution from the code, you must not set Cache-Control to no-cache and you must set Cache-Control to max-age=0 (other values may work as well). If either you have no-cache set or you have not max-age set the download will not work.

Response.AddHeader(“Pragma”, “public”);
Response.AddHeader(“Cache-Control”, “max-age=0″);

Another general solution is you must set your IIS to enable content expirations for Http Headers.

1. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS)

2. Go to your site, e.g. Default Web Sites.

3. Select your virtual directory that contains the document files. Right click on the virtual directory and open the properties.

4. Click on the HTTP Headers tab.

5. Check the Enable Content Expiration, and set the Expire after 1 day or more.

Google use Site Speed in Web Search Ranking

Google announced on April 9, 2010 that they now consider the speed it takes for a website to load when ranking it in Google search results on google.com.

The news below is part of Google announcement about this issue:

This change is part of our efforts to provide the best possible search experience for our users, as we’ve found that faster sites create happy users. Our internal studies show that visitors tend to spend less time on sites that respond slowly, and additional recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. For these reasons, we’re now taking site speed into account in our search rankings.

Site speed is just one of over 200 signals we use to determine search ranking, and because it’s a new signal, it doesn’t carry as much weight as the relevance of a page. In fact, less than 1% of all search queries on google.com are affected by the site speed signal. We launched this change a few weeks back after rigorous testing. If you haven’t seen much change to your site rankings, then this site speed change possibly did not impact your site.

In general, a website would have to be particularly slow for its ranking to be affected. We look at the time it takes to load all components of a page that contribute to page speed, including images, rich media, and Javascript/HTML/CSS code. In addition, we also want to give you some suggestions of things you can do on your side, like enabling compression for your site, enabling caching of images, JavaScript, and CSS, and minimizing the size of your JavaScript with Closure Tools.

If you’d like to learn more about speeding up your website, or evaluate your site’s speed, we encourage you to look at Site Performance in Webmaster Tools and try developer tools such as Page Speed, YSlow, and WebPageTest.org. Please note that at this time, the only way to determine whether your site has been affected is if you’ve seen a recent change in your search ranking.

Website Design and Content Guidelines

Some guidelines below are preferred by Google to help search engine find, index, and rank your site:

  • Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
  • Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.
  • Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.
  • Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and make sure that your site actually includes those words within it.
  • Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Search engine crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in images. If you must use images for textual content, consider using the “ALT” attribute to include a few words of descriptive text.
  • Make sure that your <title> elements and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.
  • Check for broken links and correct HTML.
  • If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a “?” character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.
  • Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).
  • Don’t embed text inside images. Search engines can’t read text embedded in images. If you want search engines to understand your content, keep it in regular HTML.
